Target audience case study- Imagine Dragons

Explanation of Planning

For our planning, although we started off working as a group we eventually decided that it would be best if we worked on our own as we didn't have many study lessons together to plan and each had unmovable prior commitments such as work at weekends and sometimes during weekday evenings. This made it difficult to meet up to plan outside of lessons or the few study lessons we had all together which eventually led to us doing a lot of the work by ourselves or with a partner in our group who shared similar study lessons.
A Lot of the group work we consulted each-other on but inevitably did write and plan ourselves as it was easier for each of us. Some of the group work we completed such as the costumes and characters power-point which Emily Harvey and I completed together as we had a study lesson together.
As we completed most of the work on our own we did not have to share out tasks as the work was singular but for the work that we did complete together there was no need to share out tasks as it was just coming up with initial ideas and thinking of people who could act in our music video in which each of us thought of people and created a group chat on social media for possible actors. Apart from these select few tasks, we worked on our own and completed each of these tasks as and when we could fit it in and spend a good amount of time on the blog-posts to produce a high quality piece of work.

Narrative Structure- EDITED AS OF 21/04/17

There are many different forms of narrative structures that are used in music videos to help to develop the stories and enhance the music video.
In our music video we decided to use a variety of narrative techniques to enable us to enhance our music video and allow for it to appear more complex then our initial ideas.

We chose to use a circular narrative in our music video for 'Bloodstream' as it enhanced our story and fit with our initial idea of a house party going wrong but then reversing it so that all the events that happen became undone and reversed, therefore allowing us to have a circular narrative. The use of the circular narrative also allowed for us to cut down the amount of shots that we had to film as we were repeating the shots to undo them and make the audience realise that the whole party hadn't really happened but that it was perception of what could happen when the main character enters the front door. This allows for us to add an element of surrealism in our video as it is partly fantasy and the events that happen aren't necessarily real, yet. We have shown that we have used a circular narrative by having nearly the same shot at the beginning to what we have at the end, which is just blackness due to the diagetic lighting that we used and the fact that it was quite late at night when we filmed.

Our narrative is also an example of an equilibrium which is reinforced by the use of our circular narrative. This demonstrates that even though all the peculiar events happen, in the end because we reversed all the shots nothing actually happens making the video have a balanced narrative and a solution to the peculiar events. Having an equilibrium narrative was useful for our music video as it allowed for us to stick to our initial ideas of reversing everything so that we weren't promoting alcoholism and drug use, although the song is explicitly about these things. We thought that by having a disequilibrium narrative it would produce a different story line that we didn't want and that it would perhaps, encourage alcoholism and drug use which is the opposite of the message that we wanted for our music video.

In our music video we also decided to use binary opposites which were first introduced by Strauss. Although in our music video they aren't obviously displayed, we have a binary opposition in all of the characters versus the main character. This is shown by the actions that the characters take such as drinking and partying where as although the Main character is never shown. What we do see of her is very mundane and boring unlike the other characters who are shown in the video. Also because the main character is not really shown when she is it is from a mid shot or a close up, but never of her face. Where as the other characters are shown by long shots and mid shots but never close ups as we felt that this would take the attention off of the actual party and the effect it has on the main character.

As well as the circular narrative, our narrative is linear as it follows a story and the events that happen all follow on form each-other. An example of this is the argument that the couple have which is after the catalyst of the argument. This is an example of our use of linear narrative. We thought that if we had a non linear narrative it wouldn't allow for our music video to make sense therefore making it incomprehensible to our target audience.  The linear narrative enhances our story and makes it comprehensible to the audience whilst conveying the story-line how we want it to be conveyed to the audience.

The video will be readable to the audience as we have simplified the narrative so that it does not involve so many characters

Lastly, we used a multi stranded narrative in our music video as it enhanced our initial idea of having multiple events happening to different characters. An example of this is when the antagonist (played by Bella) is passed out on the bed but at the same time the couple are arguing on the stairs. By using a multi stranded narrative and not a parallel narrative it allowed us to have the different stories instead of just having the one story and having the events follow on from each other. A multi stranded narrative is a good narrative technique to use as it allows for multiple stories that can then collide at the end of the music video. This is good as it allows for character development as well as for their to be more characters shown and involved in the story line.
The narrative will be readable to the audience by having recognisable shots as well as this tey will also only be following o=one person and seeing their point of view  This shows that our video uses a variety of narrative techniques to help develop the story and enable us to introduce more characters than we had originally planned for. It also helped us plan our music video narrative more carefully as we were aware of what we wanted to and how to do whilst incorporating a variety of narrative techniques.
